Description

1-hour overview of site selection issues, including obtaining adequate surface rights (from mineral owners) and other site selection criteria related to the development of renewable projects. Emphasis will be placed on land use and surface control issues in Texas and Louisiana.

(Program previously approved for 1.0 hours of MCLE by State Bar of Texas (1.2 hours in 50 minute states), but credit has expired.  The program may still qualify as self-study credit.

Stephen “Steve” Miller is a senior partner at Jones Walker and works out of Houston. He is co-chair of the Power and Renewables team which is part of Jones Walker's Energy industry sector group. Mr. Miller has a diverse energy practice with a particular focus on the development and construction of electrical power generation projects, including renewable generation projects.  His clients include independent power producers as well as companies that provide asset management for electric generation, including renewables, both wind and solar.  Mr. Miller started his career as a real estate lawyer, and advices power generation and other industrial clients in connections with project development and site selection, as well as securing the necessary real estate rights for development, including advices regarding surface rights, mineral issues, title, and survey matters.  Mr. Miller’s electrical power practice is both domestic and international, and being fluent in Spanish and conversational in Brazilian Portuguese, Mr. Miller has worked on various power generation projects throughout the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean.

Seth Levine is a partner at Jones Walker and works out of the New Orleans office. He is co-chair of the Midstream and Infrastructure team which is part of Jones Walker's Energy industry sector group.  Mr. Levine has a diverse energy practice and his clients include: renewable energy developers, oil, gas, and petrochemical companies, and oilfield service companies, among others.   Mr. Levine has assisted numerous solar development companies in connection with site acquisitions including advices regarding surface rights, mineral issues, title, and survey matters. He has also served as counsel to a national renewable infrastructure developer and manager in connection with restructuring a wind powered electric generating project.
