Stephen Hanemann is a partner in Kean Miller’s New Orleans office. His practice focuses on international trade, marine-asset finance, and transportation-related subject matters, including admiralty and maritime operations, intermodal carriage and shipment; foreign and domestic project development, acquisition finance, import, export, and customs-regulation compliance. His practice also involves guidance on municipal law, land use, and construction. Stephen has extensive experience in handling contract negotiations, litigation, and dispute resolution related to the Jones Act and coastwise-law compliance, injury defense, oil and gas exploration, pipeline spills and regulations, drilling accidents, well blowouts, cargo loss and damage, ship and barge collisions and allisions, vessel groundings, lift boat and jack-up rig accidents, dock damage, vessel liens, vessel seizures, cargo seizures, ocean cargo, land-shipped cargo (truck and rail), sunken barges, salvage, vessel and marine asset purchase, product sales, commercial lease agreements, inland and offshore vessel-charter parties, contracts of carriage and affreightment, time charters, bareboat charters, heavy-lift and project-cargo charter parties, terminal-servicing agreements, fleeting agreements, and other transportation agreements for bulk and break-bulk cargo handlers, shippers, carriers, stevedores, trans-loaders, LPG, and LNG terminals and facilities.
Stephen was selected by New Orleans CityBusiness as a 2012 Leadership in Law Award recipient. He has been rated by Louisiana Super Lawyers since 2012 and appears in multiple listings. He currently serves as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the World Trade Center of New Orleans. He holds an International Trade Certificate, and he is a certified-dispute-resolution professional. Stephen has written and lectured extensively on the Jones Act and U.S. coastwise law, and always relishes the opportunity to share and acquire knowledge and viewpoints on those and related topics.
Stephen is extremely active in civic and community engagement and sits on the board of directors of several local non-profit organizations. He is the past President and current alumni-event chair for Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, the development committee chair for Liberty’s Kitchen, and a member of the directorship of Boys Hope Girls Hope, and the Lakewood Property Owners Association.
Having studied Latin and French for many years, Stephen is fond of modern and classical foreign language and culture, which he often incorporates into his international trade and compliance practice. At home Stephen loves to spend time with his beautiful and talented wife, Jennifer, and cook and fish with his son and daughter, Taylor and Kate. Stephen enjoys adventurous dining and travel, and possesses a unbridled and contagious enthusiasm for law and life.
